چکیده

Z. Naturforsch. 54 a, 559-569 (1999); received June 1, 1999 The pressure in the gaseous, the isotropic liquid and nematic liquid crystalline states, as well as the isotropic-nematic transition temperature are calculated for a model system composed of non-spherical particles. The potential is a generalization of the Lennard-Jones interaction where the attractive part depends on the relative orientations of the particles and the vector joining their centers of mass. Point of departure is an augmented van der Waals approach. It involves a modified Carnahan-Starling expression associated with the repulsive part of the interaction, and an orientation dependent second virial coefficient, as well as the orientational distribution functions of a pair of particles, linked with the attractive part of the potential. In a high temperature approximation, and for a special choice of model parameters, results are presented and displayed graphically.

Investigation into the temperature dependence of isotropic- nematic phase transition of Gay- Berne liquid crystals

Density functional approach was used to study the isotropic- nematic (I-N) transition and calculate the values of freezing parameters of the Gay- Berne liquid crystal model. New direct and pair correlation functions of a molecular fluid with Gay- Berne pair potential were used. These new functions were used in density functional theory as input to calculate the isotropic- nematic transition den...

The Effect of Shear Flow on the Isotropic- Nematic Transition in Liquid Crystals

In this thesis I will discuss the effects of shear flow on the Isotropic-Nematic phase transition in liquid crystals. Shear flow has dramatic orienting effects on the rod-like constituents of nematic liquid crystals, with the general effects of (1) inducing order in the high-temperature isotropic phase, and (2) dictating a direction of alignment for the low-temperature nematic phase. Shear flow...

Energy landscape view of phase transitions and slow dynamics in thermotropic liquid crystals.

Thermotropic liquid crystals are known to display rich phase behavior on temperature variation. Although the nematic phase is orientationally ordered but translationally disordered, a smectic phase is characterized by the appearance of a partial translational order in addition to a further increase in orientational order. In an attempt to understand the interplay between orientational and trans...

Isotropic to nematic transition of aerosil-disordered liquid crystals.

We present a high-resolution study of the isotropic to nematic phase transition of a low birefringence liquid-crystal compound incorporating an aerosil gel. Calorimetry, light scattering, and microscopy data coherently combine to allow for an accurate determination of the temperature dependence of the onset of the nematic state. The nematic order develops on cooling through two distinct process...

Helix inversion in the chiral nematic and isotropic phases of a liquid crystal

Measurements of the chirality (2 pi/pitch) in the chiral nematic phase and of a structural constant proportional to the chirality in the isotropic liquid for a system in which a helix inversion line crosses the chiral nematic to isotropic phase transition line are reported. While the chirality shows a strong temperature dependence in the chiral nematic phase, it loses all temperature dependence...
